Within Dillon County, a 48-mile segment of the Little Pee Dee River within Dillon County was designated a State Scenic River in 2005. A 14-mile section of the Little Pee Dee River between Marion and Horry Counties was designated a State Scenic River in 1990. The designation extends from the US Highway 378 Bridge to the confluence with the Great Pee Dee River. The Little Pee Dee is a blackwater river with clear dark waters, sandy river bottoms and bars. This section features winding, sometimes divided, channels and open "lake" areas and is bordered by cypress-tupelo swamps and bottomland hardwood forests.
